THE GREAT LIBRARY

Infinite, ever-shifting, and sometimes dangerous, the Library exists in the space between worlds and times. Among the many who call it home are the Librarians, and only those who truly understand it may join their ranks. You seek to do so.

The path of a Librarian’s apprentice is a long one. Your current task is designed to test your skills at traversing the Library and finding information. Retrieve the six documents requested by your Librarian before the day is out and you will have completed one more step on your journey.

Good luck.

The Game

The Librarian's Apprentice is a solo journaling game created with the Firelights Creator Kit by Fari RPGs. The rules will guide you, but you are in control of where the story goes.

To play this game, you will need:

  • A journaling method
  • A flat surface to build your map on
  • A standard deck of cards
  • Two six-sided dice
  • A small token

Time to play: 30 - 90 minutes, though it can run as long as you wish.

Touchstones: The Stygian Library by Emmy Allen, the Interstitial Library Circulating Collection, Terry Pratchett’s L-space, and various works from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, including Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Princess Mononoke.

Content: This game consists of three double-sided trifold brochures and a character sheet. All PDFs are flattened for improved printing, with both color and black-and-white versions provided.

  • Volume I contains the game rules, actions you can take, and character creation.
  • Volume II contains the bestiary and roll tables for fleshing out areas of the library (descriptors, features, content categories, and document formats), events and secrets to discover, and complications to encounter.
  • Volume III contains roll tables to help flesh out patrons and inhabitants of the Great Library, including descriptors, quirks, library duties, and what information they are seeking.
  • The Character Sheet is a bookmark where you can document your stats, fatigue, resources, and familiar.
  • The Library Card is a digital prop. Should you ever find your way into the Great Library, it may be handy.

The Online Resources document includes:

  • A Google Doc version of the game for use with screen readers.
  • Google Doc and audio versions of a Play Guide that provides tips on how to play solo journaling games in general and The Librarian’s Apprentice in particular. The first section covers guiding principles; the second section is a written account of an actual play-through of The Librarian’s Apprentice.
  • An online generator loaded with all the roll tables.
  • Content for playingcards.io.

Translations

The French translation of The Librarian's Apprentice was created by Erell of AxolotlPrinted copies are available!

This was a really fun game to play, and I loved the setting and how the cards and dice worked in tandem with each other to create a very unique difficulty scale and challenge each round.  The prompts were great and engaging, and the mechanics were complex enough to be interesting without being too complicated to explain to kiddo." Playing The Librarian’s Apprentice allowed me to reexperience the magic and mystery of libraries... I loved fleshing out the simple descriptions of documents and complications into more complex objects and scenes, and I wrote something fun just for myself! (Full Review)

- Alenka Figa, librarian

"This was a wonderful, somewhat cozy solo game, with whimsy and a little Pratchett/Henson-style spookiness. The character sheet is a bookmark, people. Put it in one of your favorites, and find it again years later!"

  - Galen Pejeau | Assembly Requisite

"The Librarian's Apprentice expands on the Firelights system in both highly thematic and efficient ways…  Staying true to the Firelights ways, the game provides just enough information to get your mind going, but includes many tools to truly experience a wonderful journey alongside your familiar. Additionally, the layout of the game is beautifully achieved.  Stellar work from start to finish."

- René-Pier Deshaies | Fari RPGs

"Dan has written a masterpiece for us with each piece of the game fitting together perfectly. A joy from the first word, The Librarian's Apprentice gives players all the tools needed to get lost deep in the infinite library on a spectacular adventure.  Packed within the trifold pamphlets are tables brimming with secret knowledge, lore, and mystery to get lost in.  This is a fantastic game."

Am a librarian, thank you for the librarian/educator copy...the kindness is deeply appreciated! :-)

You are most welcome and thank you so much for being a librarian!

Hey, thanks for the library / education copy! I'm currently working on a student-run publication project with a theme that closely aligns with the Librarian's Apprentice. Having the actual files makes it much easier to explain and convince my team members to include it. The editorial team has precisely 0 budget to spend on licensing content (our material is mostly original) but I strongly believe in including a solo RPG, so having this great game be under Creative Commons is really helpful. Although, I do sincerely apologize if I claimed the wrong kind of copy... If that is indeed the case, I hope it's not a big issue. If it is, let me know how to resolve it.

That sounds like it lines up right nicely with the intended use of the education copies to me! If you have any questions or if it would help to have the content in another format, let me know at AlmostBedtimeTheater@gmail.com and I'll see what I can do. And I'd love to see the final result of your project!

I would love to buy a physical copy of this, but I'm having trouble finding it in stock anywhere. Do you know where I might find it? If not, are there any plans for it to get reprinted?

(1 edit)

Thanks for asking, and you have perfect timing! The final components of the second print run arrived yesterday and - barring any delays on the shipping routes - I expect them to be in stock at Indie Press Revolution and TabletopBookshelf.com by early next week. Additional retailers will hopefully have them back in stock in the week or so after that. Alternately, you can contact me at AlmostBedtimeTheater@gmail.com and I will be happy to work with you directly.

Yes! I'm so excited! Thank you!

Hi! I'm trying the game for the first time and I have a question about the map. I don't know if I'm missing anything but I can't see its purpose. Also do you replace the cards in the map? For example you are in 7 and have a 4 below, and then draw a 3. Do you place the 3 on top of the 4/discard the 4?

I'm really enjoying the game otherwise, I love the concept of a little apprentice traversing an infinite and magical library

Thanks for playing, and I'm delighted to hear you are enjoying it! When it comes to the map, the only bit that can impact the game is the suit of the card that represents the area you are currently in. Aside from that, the map is just a (hopefully) fun exercise, so you can place cards however you want.

I like to place the cards so that just the corners overlap because it gives me the space to put sketches on them, like in the image below.  I’ve also seen folks:

  • Place the cards edge-to-edge, letting them overlap wholly when necessary and blaming the chaos that comes from that on the shifting of the Library.
  • Ignore the card placement rules and just create a “Library area” pile with the current area at the top so they know the suit if there is a Complication to deal with.

Thank you for the education copies! I’m going to try using this (and others that I’m looking at) to inspire my elementary students to work on their writing and learn that they can have fun writing!

(+1)

You’re welcome! I’d love to hear how it turns out, and if there is any additional content I could provide to help that project go more smoothly, please let me know.

I will report back! If you know of any other rpg journals that are little kid friendly and free or have community copies available, I’d appreciate the info. I’m excited and hope this helps my struggling readers get excited about writing.

Sure! Can you reach out to me at AlmostBedtimeTheater (at) gmail.com so I can message you some info?

Thanks! I just did so!

This

is a wonderful game of searching dusty tomes for lost documents. It really uses the Firelights system well and creates a great tone.

Thank you for playing! Flavoring the game with Warhammer 40k worked really well; that was a great idea. Thank you also for mentioning the benefits of a booklet layout for online play. I’ll take a crack at putting one together as an additional format.

This is just wonderful - I showed my 9-year-old daughter (who loves anything to do with libraries) how to play and she loves it. She's very excited about having a game like this to play on her own and gets a huge kick out of describing the new rooms and types of documents.

This game is really well designed and I can highly recommend it.

That's so great to hear. Thank you for letting me know!

Great game!! I really enjoyed playing this with kiddo, and I'm very happy to have done a review for this on the site (you already have linked above, so I won't throw it in here again, haha).  Thank you for making such a cool game, especially one focused around also promoting a love of reading!

(+3)

Thank you for making this fantastic and fantastical homage to libraries! I love that it has substantial mechanics, not just prompts, and the imagery and creatures are intriguing and flavorful. It's one of the best pamphlet-style games I've read yet. I am a youth services librarian at a public library. We've been trying to get RPGs rolling at our library, and I hope to introduce this game to our teen writing group this summer.

(+2)

You're welcome and thank *you* for all you do as a librarian! I've got my fingers crossed that you get to share it with your summer writing group. If any of them get inspired to write their own game of this sort, I can heartily recommend the Firelights Creator Kit. The license on this game is such that they are welcome to grab whatever they want from it as well!

(+2)

The presentation of this game is fantastic. I love the choice to make the pamphlets look like old book covers and the character sheet a bookmark. Sincere congratulations.

(+1)

Thank you! The creation of this game was a series of delightful discoveries, not the least of which was the sudden realization about how to present the character sheet. :)

"This was a wonderful, somewhat cozy solo game, with whimsy and a little Pratchett/Henson-style spookiness. The character sheet is a bookmark, people. Put it in one of your favorites, and find it again years later!"

Is my review, but having played it again last night, I wanted to drop another note and say that this has been one of my favorite small-form games in quite some time!

It's awesome to find out folks are enjoying the game. Thank you for letting me know and for the suggestion of letting the Librarian's apprentice and their familiar spend time in our own libraries!

(+2)

Thanks so much for the librarian edition! I'm a librarian at Chicago Public Library and I'm desperately trying to bring RPGs into my programming rotation.

(+1)

You are very welcome! Libraries have been a constant presence in my life, and I owe a lot to the folks who make them possible. Thank you for being a librarian!

(+2)

I *love* this. The layout is very good on the eye, pulls me in immediately.

That’s great to hear! Thank you very much for the feedback.

Loving this so much! What a comfy game.
